Venice has never needed to try too hard to be extraordinary. The city already has the palazzi, the canals, the faded facades, the gondolas and that unmistakable sense that time moves differently here. But where you stay can completely change the way you experience it.

Over the years, Venice has become home to some of the most remarkable luxury hotels in Italy. Yet what fascinates me is that they each tell a completely different story. From the discreet world of Aman to the glamour of the Gritti Palace, the island escape of Cipriani, the quiet exclusivity of Airelles and the intimacy of Palazzo Venart, luxury in Venice is certainly not one-size-fits-all.

Aman Venice - The Art of Discretion

Aman Venice feels like a secret.

Set inside a magnificent 16th-century palazzo on the Grand Canal, the hotel has that quality I associate with true luxury: it doesn't need to announce itself. There is no sense of spectacle for spectacle's sake. Instead, there is space, silence and an extraordinary attention to detail.

For me, Aman represents the idea of quiet luxury before quiet luxury became a trend. The historic architecture is allowed to breathe, while contemporary details create a feeling that is sophisticated rather than overly polished.

It is the kind of place where you don't necessarily want to rush out and see everything Venice has to offer. You simply want to stay a little longer.

Belmond Hotel Cipriani - Venice, but Different

Then there is the Cipriani.

Located on Giudecca, just a short boat ride from the centre of Venice, it offers something the city itself rarely does: space.

Beautiful gardens, a legendary swimming pool, views across the lagoon and the feeling of having your own little world away from the crowds make the Cipriani feel like a Mediterranean resort.

Its greatest charm: You can spend the morning exploring Venice, then return by boat and suddenly everything becomes quieter.

For me, the Cipriani also represents a more relaxed interpretation of luxury - glamorous, certainly, but never too serious. It is a hotel made for long lunches, late afternoons by the pool and evenings that stretch much longer than planned.

Few hotels embody the glamour of old Venice quite like this historic palazzo overlooking the Grand Canal. Staying here feels like stepping into another era - one of aristocrats, artists, grand dinners and beautifully dressed guests arriving by boat.

What I find particularly compelling about Airelles is the sense of privacy. Away from the constant movement of central Venice, the property feels like a private residence - a place where the experience is less about being seen and more about simply being there.

The gardens are an important part of the magic. In a city dominated by stone and water, having lush green space feels wonderfully unexpected.

This is Venice for travellers who have already seen the highlights and are now looking for something more intimate: slower mornings, beautiful food & exceptional service.

Palazzo Venart - The Romantic Hideaway

Smaller, more intimate and deeply romantic, it feels like being invited into someone's extraordinary Venetian home.

The beauty of Palazzo Venart lies in its details. The historic setting, the courtyards, the rooms and the sense of history create an atmosphere that is difficult to replicate in a larger hotel.

This is the seductive Venice: not the Venice of ticking off landmarks, but the Venice of getting slightly lost, returning to a beautiful palazzo, having dinner somewhere special and watching the city become quiet after sunset.
